10 Years, 10 Ways, 10 Reasons to Give

This year is a big year. It marks ten years of CPC connecting and supporting grassroots leaders, groups, and networks throughout Western North Carolina! We invite you to participate in this celebration, and to help us continue to build the social justice movement.

Ten Reasons to Give

Each ‘Reason’ represents individuals and groups impacted by CPC’s work. Check back to watch these stories unfold throughout 2010!

Strengthening Grassroots Groups

CPC has strengthened the capacity of more than 150 grassroots groups, ranging from an Appalachian crafts cooperative to African American youth programs and Cherokee cultural organizations.

Developing Leaders

Thousands of grassroots leaders from across WNC have turned to CPC for skill building, training, and support.

Improving Communities

These leaders and groups have created hundreds of projects to improve their communities, from food pantries to sidewalk construction, education programs to living wage advocacy, and dismantling racism to cultural preservation.

Developing Businesses

CPC has helped organize worker-owned businesses in six Western North Carolina counties, such as Opportunity Threads, a cut and sew textile cooperative started by skilled workers in a town where factories have closed down.

Creating Jobs

CPC’s partner organizations have created more than 70 full and part time jobs, many of them in rural counties where good jobs are scarce.

Advocating for Justice

CPC has worked with our partners to make laws and policies more just and fair, including immigrant rights, workers’ rights, living wage policies, and equal access to higher education.

Sharing Resources

Rather than competing for resources, CPC makes small grants and collaborates in fundraising, which has put tens of thousands of dollars in the hands of grassroots organizations.

Pioneering Research

CPC is the first organization in the United States to study the importance of horizontal giving—the reciprocal exchange of material, emotional and spiritual assistance among friends, family and neighbors.

Living out our Values

CPC believes in honoring the dignity and gifts of all people, especially those whose voices have been silenced, and takes action both inside and outside of CPC to respect and include people of all races, languages, nationalities, genders, class backgrounds, ages, and sexual orientations.

Mobilizing Power

CPC connects Latino, African American, Cherokee, and White Appalachian community leaders with one another to build relationships and work together for racial, economic, and social justice.
