New Gen

In Partnership with Asheville City Schools

New Gen is a youth development program designed to empower Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) girls by fostering confidence, leadership, creativity, and self-care.

Through hands-on activities, mentorship, and community engagement, New Gen creates a safe space for young girls at Claxton Elementary and Asheville Middle School to grow, express themselves, and develop essential life skills. New Gen currently serves over 35 students in Asheville City Schools, and will be expanding to impact even more young lives at Hall Fletcher Elementary in the 2025-2026 school year.

We believe in building strong relationships not only with our girls, but also with their families. New Gen implements parent engagement initiatives to foster family involvement, communication, and community support. Students and families have access to long-term support and critical resources through the Center for Participatory Change Resource Room.

Our Focus Areas

  • Helping girls build emotional intelligence, resilience, and self-awareness.

  • Encouraging self-expression, goal-setting, and personal growth.

  • Engaging in DIY beauty sessions, journaling, vision boards, and art therapy.

  • Promoting mindfulness, relaxation, and emotional well-being.

  • Strengthening relationships through group discussions, cooking classes, and dance parties.

  • Through IRL After-School, girls participate in career-focused learning experiences.

Why New Gen Matters

The collaboration between CPC and Asheville City Schools is a testament to the transformative power of community partnerships in education. By combining the strengths of a community-focused organization with the educational expertise of our schools, this collaboration aims to create a vibrant, inclusive learning environment that propels students towards success and prepares them for a bright future. Through shared values and a commitment to participatory change, CPC and Asheville City Schools are laying the foundation for a stronger, more empowered community.

New Gen provides a culturally affirming, supportive environment where BIPOC girls develop self-worth, leadership skills, and the ability to navigate life’s challenges. By fostering creativity, social-emotional growth, career exploration, and family engagement, we uplift and inspire the next generation of young leaders.
